Returning June 3–14, 2026, the Tribeca Festival remains one of downtown Manhattan's signature cultural events, with roots deeply tied to the neighborhood itself. The festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in the aftermath of September 11, at a time when Lower Manhattan was still recovering both emotionally and economically. The intention was clear: bring people back downtown, support local businesses and help restore energy to a neighborhood deeply impacted by the attacks.
More than two decades later, what began as a film-focused initiative has evolved into a global cultural platform spanning film premieres, live talks, music, immersive media, television and public programming throughout Tribeca and adjoining neighborhoods. Each June, theaters, BMCC, Spring Studios and Pier 57 become part of the experience, drawing filmmakers, artists and audiences from around the world.
The festival also played a major role in shaping how people view Tribeca today. Over time, the festival helped bring wider attention to a creative identity that was already part of Tribeca's character, reinforcing the neighborhood's connection to film, art, design and culture.
